Child with Cerebral Palsy Treated with Cord Blood Stem Cells

I have corresponded with both Shane G. Smith, PhD and Mary Schneider while writing my book Right to Recover, Winning the Political and Religious Wars over Stem Cell Research in America. Shane is the Science Director for Children's Neurobiological Solutions (CNS) Foundation. Mary's son, Ryan, was treated for Cerebral Palsy with an infusion of his own stem cells from cord blood his parent's banked when he was born. Mary is currently working to pass Illinois Senate Bill 0019.

In this month’s feature story in CNS's newsletter, Mary describes the personal journey that brought her family to Duke University where Dr. Joanne Kurtzberg returned her son’s own umbilical cord blood stem cells to his bloodstream. She then explains the amazing recovery that followed soon thereafter. Please understand that it is not clear how - or even if - cord blood stem cells contributed to Ryan’s recovery.

Mary and CNS Shane will answer questions about Mary’s amazing story at the CNS Online Community Forum April 26-27 beginning at 11AM Eastern.

Banking cord blood is one of the simplest things any parent can do to help them in the case of future illnesses. The controversy over stem cells as innocent as these drives me batty.
