Stem Cell Dispatches from the Struggling State of Michigan

On November 4 of this year, Michigan voters approved Proposal 2, which repealed the state's ban on embryonic stem cell research.

In a state with one of the highest employment rates in the nation and an economy shattered by the collapsing auto industry, Proposal 2, which passed by a margin of 52.6 to 47.4 percent, quickly was embraced by scientists, entrepreneurs, and many citizens as a potential life saver.

Last week, Sean Morrison, who directs the University of Michigan's Center for Stem Cell Biology, told Crain's Detroit that "very quickly there will be an infusion of millions in grants to support research here."
