Stem Cell Debate Continues in Colorado

The restriction former Pres. Bush put into place did not make using blastocystic stem cells illegal. It stated that taxpayer money could only be used for stem cell lines created before August 9, 2001. Obama’s reversal will remove the date restriction and allow scientists using newer cell lines to apply for government grants to fund their stem cell research. The newer cells are easier to work with, represent more diversity, and have no mouse feeder cells to contend with.

Congresswoman Diana DeGette (D- Colo.) says, "Many of my pro-life colleagues say this is the ultimate pro-life decision. Because you're taking embryos created to give life, which are no longer needed and going to be thrown away. And you're allowing people to donate them for research that could cure disease and save millions of lives."
